07/28/2008 -
San Jose, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Jose Earthquakes acquired
midfielder/forward Arturo Alvarez from FC Dallas in exchange for allocation
money and a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the
teams announced on Monday.
"Arturo is a dynamic attacking player who should fit in well with our team,"
Earthquakes General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle said. "He can play
both in midfield and at forward so he also has great versatility, which is
important for us as we continue to build our team."
The 23-year-old Alvarez began his MLS career with the Earthquakes after being
selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft out of high
school. He made 16 appearances with FC Dallas this season, scoring three goals
and three assists. With FC Dallas from 2005-08, Alvarez recorded 11 goals and
11 assists in 86 appearances.
"He has grown into a very good attacking player in this league and he was
outstanding last season," Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said. "He is a great
presence in the final third of the field, something that we have been lacking
this year. It is exciting for the club to acquire a player of his caliber."
FC Dallas originally acquired Alvarez from San Jose in 2005 along with Richard
Mulrooney and the Earthquakes sixth overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft in
exchange for Brad Davis and the fourth overall pick in the SuperDraft.
