Rays use long ball to top Indians

Baseball Betting Lines

08/06/2008 - St. Petersburg, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Dioner Navarro hit a home run and drove in three runs, as the Tampa Bay Rays doubled up the Cleveland Indians, 8-4, in the middle contest of a three-game set from Tropicana Field.

Evan Longoria belted a two-run homer and scored twice for the Rays, who have won six of their last seven contests. Cliff Floyd added a solo shot, while Gabe Gross and Carlos Pena drove in a run each in the win.

Edwin Jackson (8-7) got the win as he lasted 5 2/3 frames and yielded just three runs on seven hits.

"What makes us win is pitching and defense," Floyd said. "And timely hitting. We got the monkey off our backs with the Indians. We'll take this one and run."

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run home run for the Indians, who have alternated wins and losses the last seven games. Shin-Soo Choo and Grady Sizemore knocked in a run each in defeat.

Fausto Carmona (5-4) was saddled with the loss as he gave up four runs on three hits and five walks in only four innings of work

"He was just all over the place," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "Poor command, wasn't able to make adjustments to fix it."

Leading 4-3, Tampa tacked on some more runs in the seventh off Rafael Betancourt. Pena worked a one-out walk and Longoria followed with his 22nd homer of the year, a new record for a Rays rookie. Floyd kept it going with a two-out, solo blast to center, which brought Juan Rincon in from the bullpen. Navarro greeted Rincon to the game by launching one of his fastballs over the fence in right for an 8-3 advantage.

Cleveland got a run back in the eighth. Andy Marte led off with a double and, after Asdrubal Cabrera popped up, Sizemore brought the runner home with a line drive single to make it 8-4, but that was as close as the visitors got.

The Indians jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning. David Dellucci and Kelly Shoppach both singled with one out before Peralta flied out to center, advancing Dellucci to third. Choo then clubbed an RBI single to left field.

The Rays rallied to tie the game in the home half. Akinori Iwamura opened the frame with a stand-up triple and B.J. Upton worked a walk. Pena then offered a sac fly to left field, allowing Iwamura to cross home.

Shoppach walked with one out in the third and Peralta followed by depositing the first pitch he saw over the fence in right-center field for a 3-1 Tribe lead.

Pena and Longoria opened the fourth frame with back-to-back walks before Eric Hinske went down swinging. Floyd then grounded out, which advanced both runners into scoring position, and Navarro hit a grounder up the middle to plate both runners. Gross kept it going with an RBI triple, and it was 4-3 Rays.
